What is Reactivity?

Reactivity is an umbrella term used for barking at, lunging towards or growling at another dog, person, vehicle or other trigger.

Reactivity is caused by underlying emotions and these emotions can be fear, anxiety, frustration, excitement, anger.

When dogs use displays of aggression, or become reactive, they are in effect shouting to get their message heard. Growling, snarling, pulling at or lunging at triggers, air snapping, baring teeth, barking etc, are the equivalent of a person shouting in anger and frustration or lashing out.

These behaviours tell us the dog is over threshold and can’t cope with the experience.

The more the dog is exposed towards triggers that cause it to feel stressed, frustrated or anxious, and the more the dog rehearses defensive displays, – the more deep seated those problems become and the more reactive the dog becomes next time.

You’ve heard of the saying “practice makes perfect”? Well that includes reactive behaviour.

Reactive behaviour is an automatic response to a perceived threat.

If your dog is showing reactive behaviours, they’re not being "naughty"—they’re simply trying to cope with something they find overwhelming or frightening. Each dog’s journey is unique, so we recommend one-to-one training to create a calm, supportive environment suited to their specific needs.

Our Bronze Programme for Reactive Dogs is a personalised one-to-one service that addresses your dog’s individual fears and anxieties. This programme builds essential foundations, helping your dog feel safe and confident. Only when they’re ready, we may gradually introduce group training.

Our goal is long-term success, building trust and resilience at a pace your dog can handle, so you can enjoy more relaxed, enjoyable walks together.

Dogs can experience different levels of reactivity, from overexcitement to aggression. There are also different triggers for reactive behaviour such as other dogs, people or vehicles. Whatever your dog's reactivity problem, we can help.

Training is always conducted at your dog’s own pace, as real learning occurs only when they’re calm and comfortable—not under stress. At People and Dogs, we are dedicated to gentle, ethical, and fear-free methods, never using force, pain, or intimidation. Our approach builds trust and makes training a positive, supportive experience for both you and your dog.

When to Consult a Certified Behaviourist?

While our reactivity programme is designed for dogs experiencing fear-based, frustration-driven, or over-excited reactivity, some cases require additional expertise.

If your dog exhibits more serious or complex behaviours such as aggression, a history of biting, compulsive disorders, or resource guarding, we recommend consulting with a Certified Behaviourist. For these cases, please visit Victoria Cooper's website for expert guidance tailored to more complex behavioural concerns.
